Meet the Governors
Our School Governing Body
Governors are a voluntary body of people who guide and support the strategic direction of the school. They are members of the school team and their contribution to the running of the school is highly valued.
Our role is to support the Headteacher and staff in ensuring that the highest standards and best support possible are in place for the children and families who are the key players in our mission. We do this by monitoring what goes on in the school and ensuring everything that the government requires is in place. We have staff and parent representatives and the rest of the governors are members of the local community who have been co-opted onto the Governing Body.
Each half term there is a Full Governing Body meeting and two committee meetings - one each for Finance & Resources and Curriculum. The minutes of all of these meetings are available on request from the School Office.
Mr D Rowlinson - Chair of Governing Body / Maths Governor
Originally from the north-east of England my first job was as a research scientist in the packaging industry. I moved from there into teaching and spent the last 16 years of my working life as Headteacher of Cowplain Community School.
On retirement I joined the governing body of Padnell Junior School and I have been Chair of Governors for the last six years. In my role as a governor, I am responsible for monitoring Maths, Science and PSHE.
Mrs J Snares - Vice Chair of Governing Body / Chair of Curriculum & Standards Committee / English Governor
I'm a mum to 2 children, born in 2008 and 2010. I used to be a secondary maths teacher, but now I run the toddler groups at St Wilfrid's church and support my husband, the Vicar.
I'm vice-chair of governors and try to be as active as possible in POPSA, while I still have a child in the school. I was originally a parent governor, but was co-opted when my term as a parent finished."
Mr R Osborne - Chair of Finance Committee / Health & Safety Governor
I have been associated with Padnell Junior School since the 1980’s when my children progressed to the school from Padnell Infant. I know what you are saying “he doesn’t look old enough” but it is true. I am a retired teacher who spent 38 years at Cowplain School where for several years I was responsible for the liaison with Padnell Junior and then became a Governor in 2012. From being a parent through to being a governor it has given me considerable pleasure observing children’s progress and transition to secondary education. It is a privilege to be able to support the school in any way I can. I am also Chair of Governors at Padnell Infant as I believe it is important the schools continue to work so well together for the benefit of all the children.
As a former PE teacher, whose lessons at the beginning of my career included club swinging and star jumps, my interests revolve around sport. Playing for years but now confined to being a spectator who clearly knows more about the game than either the players on the pitch or the management staff! As a Portsmouth FC season ticket holder there is nothing like watching good football on wet Tuesday evening at Fratton Park and sometimes it is nothing like watching good football on a wet Tuesday evening
I would ask parents to continue to support this outstanding school in any way they can as it is so valuable.
Mr J Moss - Vice Chair of Finance Committee
I joined the Padnell Junior School governing body in January 2019 as a ‘co-opted’ governor. I am vice-chair of the Finance and Resources Committee and also responsible for monitoring computing. Two of my children have attended the school – Ethan (2016 – 2020) and Phoebe (2019 -) and my wife works here as a Learning Support Assistant.
For the past 20 years I have worked in the Civil Service.
Mrs K Shaw - Curriculum Committee
My name is Katherine Shaw and I have been a parent governor at Padnell Junior school for the past year. I have a child in year 4 and I am currently a full-time mature student study Education and Inclusion at the University of Winchester. I have a special interest in inclusion and equality within education and this forms the background of my approach to governance. I have found being a governor to be both informative and rewarding; it has given me a valuable insight into the way that schools are run that has, in turn, made me more appreciative of what the staff at Padnell do in order to get the best for our children. This has never been more apparent than through the covid-19 pandemic restrictions, the challenge of which was immensely difficult. I monitor the History, French and Music provision at the school, as well as sitting on the curriculum and standards committee and I am a member of the head teacher’s performance management panel.
Mr T Fardy - Curriculum & Standards Committee
I am a new co-opted Governor (September 2020), new to Padnell Junior School, but not new to the role of Governor, as I was formerly a Governor at Purbrook Infant School. I taught Maths in secondary schools for 33 years, 30 of which were at The Cowplain School, until I was able to take early retirement in 2016. I was also involved in several roles within the Pastoral system at The Cowplain School so have a range of experiences within education. The opportunity of being a Governor again allows me to contribute to the continued improvement of Padnell Junior School. I have found that being a Governor has been very rewarding, looking at the education of children from a different perspective than as a teacher. It gives one the opportunity to take a wholistic approach to the education of children, supporting the Headteacher, staff and fellow Governors to provide the best education possible. My role within the Governing Body is on the Curriculum and Standards Committee, with Art being my subject to monitor.
Mrs R Price - SEND Governor
My name is Becky Price and I have had 3 children go through Padnell Junior school since 2007. They have all left now but I am happy to continue as a co-opted Governor at Padnell. I am the SEND governor so I meet with the SENCO regularly throughout the year. My role is the governing body's champion for Learners with SEND and those with inclusion needs. I will support and challenge the school to ensure that no Learner is treated less favourably, denied opportunity or left behind because they have additional needs.
