Maths

Maths is an interconnected and essential subject , the National Curriculum aims are for pupils

  • to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including with varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

At Padnell Junior we strive to ensure that all pupils develop the skills and knowledge to enable them to move on successfully to the next stage of education and to their adult life.

We use Hampshire's long-term and medium-term planning documents to organise our delivery of the domains within maths. By using these plans pupils are able to make connections between different domains, have opportunities to problem solve and reason logically, and are able to revisit domains in order to practise key skills  and build on prior knowledge. We currently teach five sessions of maths each week with the majority of children working in their class groups. Additional support is available for those pupils who require it in the form of a focused group or through additional interventions based entirely on individual needs

We use a variety of resources and sources used to deliver the learning, including digital technology. We are committed to the concrete, pictorial abstract approach (CPA) where pupils use physical resources to learn about a new topic or stage in maths before  moving on to pictorial representation and finally experiencing abstract calculations and problems.
